How your oral health is ruining your skin

If you've been on the  quest to achieve acne free skin you've probably realized that it can actually be a complicated task! Between stress, environmental pollution, hormones, genetics, products, lifestyle habits, diet, workout regimens, and so on and so forth, there is a lot at play when it comes to the health and appearance of our skin. But what most people don't realise is that the health of your mouth can have major bearing on your skin.

Acne, what is it exactly?

Acne happens when oils and dead skin cells clog the teeny tiny little hair follicles on your face and body. Some people have put acne down to hormones and eating too much sugar but research has shown that not to be true. Many adults suffer from acne too, and poor diet isn’t its only cause. Hormonal imbalances, inflammation within the body, and poor oral hygiene can all cause acne.

How Does My Oral Health Affect My Acne?

Your mouth is not just full of bad bacteria, but good bacteria as well! When the bacteria throw a party in your mouth and the bad guys start to take over, they can enter your bloodstream and cause inflammation, infection, and disease.

When bacteria called propionibacterium multiply on your teeth and under your gums, they can enter your bloodstream and negatively affect your skin. If you have an infected tooth or bleeding gums and notice that your skin is developing acne at the same time, they are likely linked.

Other diseases and issues linked to an abundance of bad oral bacteria include heart disease, pneumonia, pre-term labor of babies with a low birth weight, and complications with diabetes.

How Can I Keep Both My Teeth & Skin Healthy?

You have probably heard it a gazillion times, but brushing your teeth twice a day, cleaning your tongue daily with a tongue cleaner, and flossing at least once a day will help reduce the amount of bacteria on the surface of your teeth, under your gums, and in your bloodstream.

Be sure to combine this with a healthy, balanced diet that is low in sugar and acids like soft drinks and high in calcium, fiber, and essential vitamins, especially Vitamin D. Also drink plenty of water, and regularly take time to relax and de-stress.
